Vincent Van Gogh Room
Lilac Bush, France 1889
This exquisite work was painted in Saint-Remy, where the artist was undergoing treatment. Van Gogh depicted a lilac bush in the hospital gardens, employing broken, individual brushstrokes and vibrant forms reminiscent of the lessons of Impressionism, yet with a spatial dynamism unfamiliar to the Impressionists. This bush is filled with powerful, lively energy and dramatic expression. The restrained natural motif is transformed by the master’s temperament and the brilliance of his emotions. Embodied in this fragment of an overgrown garden, we find all the life-giving forces of nature. By rejecting Impressionism, Van Gogh created his own artistic language, expressing the romantic, passionate, and deeply dramatic perception of the artist towards the world.
